Preventing Foot Problems in Children

Parents can help their children prevent foot problems and associated pain as they age by taking care of and teaching their children to take proper care of their feet. Developing healthy foot habits in children starts with parents washing their children’s feet each day and making sure they are dry, buying shoes that fit properly (with enough room in the toe box to allow for growth), using right sized cotton and/or wool socks on children’s feet to keep them warm and allow room for development, cutting toenails straight across and not too short to prevent ingrown toenails, and allowing children to go barefoot in the home so their feet will grow and gain strength without restriction. Taking children to a podiatrist early on can start them off right, provide a baseline for their foot development, and introduce them to a specialist who will be able to diagnose and treat any foot problems that might arise in their lives.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact Jordan S. Steinberg, DPM of Florham Park Podiatry . Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.

Making Sure Your Shoes Fit Right

Selecting shoes that fit properly is critical for comfort and prevention of foot problems. Making sure shoes fit right is especially essential to children, people who are on their feet a lot, or have arthritis, diabetes, or other foot disorders. Correct shoe fit is achieved when the shoe shape matches the foot shape and shoe size accommodates the widest part of the foot – the first metatarsal joint – so toes can spread out comfortably. Steps that will best ensure shoes fit right are: trying them on later in the day when feet are more swollen, wear the socks you plan to wear with the shoes (or thin socks if socks will not be worn with them), fitting a finger in the back of the shoe comfortably, making sure there is adequate room between the shoe and the big toe (as feet move forward when walking), and walking in the shoe to check for friction, pinching or any other discomfort. Seeking advice from a podiatrist before and after purchasing shoes can help in proper shoe selection and evaluation so that complications can be avoided.

Getting the right shoe size is an important part of proper foot health. Seek the assistance of Jordan S. Steinberg, DPM from Florham Park Podiatry . Our doctor will provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Getting the Right Shoe Size

There are many people who wear shoes that are the incorrect size, negatively affecting their feet and posture. Selecting the right shoes is not a difficult process, so long as you keep several things in mind when it comes to choosing the right pair.

  • When visiting the shoe store, use the tools available to measure your foot.
  • Be sure there is ‘wiggle room’. There should be about an inch between your toes and the tip of your shoes.
  • Do not always assume you are the same size, as manufacturers run differently.
  • Purchase shoes later in the day, as your feet swell as the day progresses.
  • If a shoe is not comfortable, it is not suitable. Most shoes can’t be ‘broken in’, and comfort should be the ultimate goal when it comes to choosing the right pair of shoes

As our feet hold our body weight and keep us moving, it is important to treat them right. Picking the right pair of shoes can provide your feet comfort and mobility without pain.

Treatments for Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease, despite its name, is actually an injury. Common in active children between the ages of 8 and 14, Sever’s disease refers to the inflammation of the growth plates in a child’s heels. This causes heel pain that can make walking, running, and jumping difficult. Sever’s disease is treated conservatively, through simple and noninvasive methods. If your child has Sever’s disease, they should rest their injured foot as much as possible, limiting any high impact activities that can put pressure on the foot. Inflammation can be reduced by applying ice to the injured heel and taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Stretching the calves gently can help increase flexibility and improve recovery. You can protect the heel by wearing comfortable shoes ,or orthotics, and resume normal activities slowly and carefully to avoid re-injury. For more information, please consult with a podiatrist.

Sever's disease often occurs in children and teens. If your child is experiencing foot or ankle pain, see Jordan S. Steinberg, DPM from Florham Park Podiatry . Our doctor can treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.

Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office located in Florham Park, NJ . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle injuries.

What Causes Running Injuries?

Running can be great exercise but must be done with care to prevent injuries that can keep you off your feet. The most common cause of running injuries is overtraining. If you run too many miles, too quickly, and too often, you put an enormous amount of strain on your feet and ankles, significantly increasing your risk of injury. To stop this from happening, remember that slow and steady wins the race. Increase the distance, speed, or frequency of your runs one by one and slowly over time. Another common culprit behind running injuries is wearing the wrong shoes. Look for running shoes that fit properly and offer cushioning and support. If you’re a runner, a podiatrist can help you by treating any existing foot or ankle issues, prescribing orthotics if needed, and educating you about injury prevention.

Exercising your feet regularly with the proper foot wear is a great way to prevent injuries. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Jordan S. Steinberg, DPM of Florham Park Podiatry . Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

How to Prevent Running Injuries

Many common running injuries are caused by overuse and overtraining. When the back of the kneecap starts wearing out and starts causing pain in your knee, this is commonly referred to as runner’s knee. Runner’s knee is a decrease in strength in your quadriceps and can occur if you’re not wearing properly fitted or supporting shoes. To prevent runner’s knee, focusing on hip strengthening is a good idea, as well as strengthening your quads to keep the kneecaps aligned.

What Are Some Causes of Running Injuries?
- One cause of a common running injury is called iliotibial band syndrome.
- Plantar fasciitis is also another common injury.
- Stress fractures can occur from overtraining, lack of calcium, or even your running style.

Best Ways to Prevent Running Injuries
- Wear footwear that fits properly and suits your running needs.
- Running shoes are the only protective gear that runners have to safeguard them from injury.
- Make a training schedule. Adding strengthening exercises as well as regular stretching can help keep you strong and limber and can lessen the possibility of injuries.
- Stretching keeps muscles limber; this will help you gain better flexibility.

Cracked Heels Foot Care

Dry, cracked heels can have many causes, such as living in a dry climate or wearing open-backed shoes. In some cases, it can be a sign of a more serious underlying condition, like diabetes. Most cases of cracked heels can be treated at home with a good foot care routine. Soak your feet in warm water for 10 minutes daily to soften the skin. Then use a loofah or pumice stone to gently exfoliate the heels. Afterward, apply a moisturizer to keep heels soft and hydrated. If your cracked heels don’t improve with home care, or if the cracks are deep, painful, or bleeding, please seek the care of a podiatrist.

If the skin on your feet starts to crack, you may want to see a podiatrist to find treatment. If you have any concerns, contact Jordan S. Steinberg, DPM from Florham Park Podiatry . Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Cracked Heels

It is important to moisturize your cracked heels in order to prevent pain, bleeding, and infection. The reason cracked heels form is because the skin on the foot is too dry to support the immense pressure placed on them. When the foot expands, the dry skin on the foot begins to split.

Ways to Help Heal Them

  • Invest in a good foot cream
  • Try Using Petroleum Jelly
  • Ease up on Soaps
  • Drink Plenty of Water

Ways to Prevent Cracked Heels

  • Moisturize After Showering
  • Skip a Shower
  • Keep Shower Water Lukewarm
  • Don’t Scrub Your Feet

If you are unsure how to proceed in treating cracked heels, seek guidance from a podiatrist. Your doctor will help you with any questions or information you may need.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office located in Florham Park, NJ . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.
