Foot Pain May Increase With Age

Having any type of foot pain can cause difficulty in completing even the smallest tasks. The number of foot occurrences can increase as the aging process occurs and approximately 45 percent of people who are over 45 years old will experience some form of foot pain. Poor circulation can occur with decreased blood flow, and this often affects the feet. Age can weaken the immune system which may increase the risk of developing toenail fungus, cracked heels, and athlete’s foot. These types of conditions can also occur from poor foot hygiene, and this can be common among middle-aged or older people. Additionally, foot pain may develop from extra weight gain that might occur when one retires. All these factors may be remedied by implementing specific foot stretches into your exercise regime to help strengthen the feet. If you have foot pain, please seek the help of a podiatrist who can effectively determine what the cause is and offer you the correct treatment options.

Arthritis Can Cause Pain in the Feet and Ankles

If you are suffering from tenderness, pain, or stiffness in the joints of your feet or ankles, call us to schedule an appointment.

One of the most common side effects of pregnancy is swollen feet. It happens as a result of increased fluids that are necessary for the fetus’s development, and can be quite uncomfortable. It often becomes worse as the pregnancy progresses, which may happen from the pressure the growing baby puts on the veins. The majority of women cannot prevent swollen feet from occurring during their pregnancy, although there are methods that can be implemented which can reduce its severity. Walking during the day is instrumental in maintaining good circulation, and drinking plenty of water daily can help to shed excess sodium. Sleeping on the left side may take pressure off of the vein that causes the swelling, and wearing compression socks may lead the feet to feeling better. If you would like more information about how to reduce swollen feet, please ask a podiatrist who can offer you effective relief tips.

Swollen feet can be a sign of an underlying condition. If you have any concerns, contact Jordan S. Steinberg, DPM of Florham Park Podiatry . Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Swollen feet are a common ailment among pregnant women and people who stand or sit for extended periods. Aging may increase the possibility of swollen feet and patients who are obese often notice when their feet are swelling too. There may be medical reasons why swollen feet occur:

  • Phlebitis - A condition that causes the veins to become inflamed and can also cause leg pain.
  • Liver disease - This may lead to low blood levels of albumin which is a protein. This can cause fluid in the blood to pass into the tissues and several areas of the body can become swollen.
  • Heart failure - When the heart doesn’t pump properly the blood that is normally pumped back to the heart can pool in the veins of the legs causing swollen feet.
  • Kidney disease - One of the main functions of the kidneys is releasing excess fluid in the body. This type of condition can make it difficult for the kidneys to function properly, and as a result the feet may become swollen.
  • Deep-vein thrombosis (DVT)- This is a serious condition where blood clots form in the veins of the legs. They can block the return of blood from the legs to the heart which may cause the feet to swell. It is important to be treated by a podiatrist if this condition is present.

Swollen feet can also be caused by bone and tendon conditions, including fractures, arthritis, and tendinitis. Additionally, there may be skin and toenail conditions and an infection may cause the feet to swell. Patients who take medicine to treat high blood pressure may be prone to getting swollen feet.

Many patients elevate their feet to help relieve the swelling and this is generally a temporary remedy. When a podiatrist is consulted the reason behind the swelling can be uncovered and subsequently treated.

One of the most common things noticed by pregnant women is their swollen feet and ankles. It is a normal occurrence during pregnancy because of the excess fluid that the body produces for the growing fetus. The swelling may worsen as the due date approaches and may cause extreme discomfort during warmer weather. There are effective methods that can be implemented to help minimize existing swelling during pregnancy. These can include elevating the feet as often as possible, wearing support stockings during the day, and avoiding standing for extended periods. Additionally, it may help to lie on the left side when sleeping as well as drink plenty of water daily to help release some of the fluid. Some women find comfort in swimming or standing in a pool and exercising regularly. If you are pregnant and have extremely swollen feet, please consult with a podiatrist who can provide effective relief methods.

What Foot Problems Can Arise During Pregnancy?

One problem that can occur is overpronation, which occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and tends to roll inward.  This can cause pain and discomfort in your heels while you’re walking or even just standing up, trying to support your baby.

Another problem is edema, or swelling in the extremities. This often affects the feet during pregnancy but tends to occur in the later stages.

How Can I Keep My Feet Healthy During Pregnancy?

  • Wearing orthotics can provide extra support for the feet and help distribute weight evenly
  • Minimize the amount of time spent walking barefoot
  • Wear shoes with good arch support
  • Wear shoes that allow for good circulation to the feet
  • Elevate feet if you experience swelling
  • Massage your feet
  • Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet

What Does a Podiatrist Do?

Keeping your feet healthy is extremely important. To ensure proper foot health, seeing a podiatrist on a regular basis is important, especially if you have neuropathy, peripheral artery disease, or any other ailment that affects the feet. Podiatrists are doctors who specialize in conditions of the toes, feet, and ankles. Among the many conditions they are trained to deal with are ingrown toenails, heel and arch pain, gait problems, and sprains. They are also trained to work with patients who have diabetes and arthritis. Recommendations from a podiatrist may include prescription medication, exercise plans, and custom orthotics to correct biomechanical issues. A podiatrist can use imaging tests and other methods to determine the extent and severity of your foot problems. If you are seeing a podiatrist for the first visit, it is a good idea to wear the shoes you normally wear, so a diagnosis of foot alignment and wear patterns can be conducted.

If you are experiencing pain in the feet or ankles, don’t join the stubborn majority refusing treatment. Feel free to contact Jordan S. Steinberg, DPM from Florham Park Podiatry . Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Podiatrist?

Someone would seek the care of a podiatrist if they have suffered a foot injury or have common foot ailments such as heal spurs, bunions, arch problems, deformities, ingrown toenails, corns, foot and ankle problems, etc.

Podiatric Treatment

A podiatrist will treat the problematic areas of the feet, ankle or lower leg by prescribing the following:

  • Physical therapy
  • Drugs
  • Orthotic inserts or soles
  • Surgery on lower extremity fractures

A common podiatric procedure a podiatrist will use is a scanner or force plate which will allow the podiatrist to know the designs of orthotics. Patients are then told to follow a series of tasks to complete the treatment. The computer will scan the foot a see which areas show weight distribution and pressure points. The podiatrist will read the analysis and then determine which treatment plans are available.
